We moved into our new place on Friday. It's in the barrio of Arugelles. We are really really lucky.  We arrived Monday night with a cat and no luggage (David's showed up, but mine are still not here) and found a place by Friday. To move into most places around here, you have to get proof from a local bank that you have enough money in your bank account, usually 3 months of rent. It's called an "aval". To get an aval, you have to have a bank account in Spain. We have an account with ING and we couldn't get an aval from them, because our account was opened in the US, so if you ever move to Spain, make opening a Spanish bank account the very first thing you do if you are searching for an apartment and use to find an apartment. We still have to get an aval, but our landlady was nice and let us move in anyway. We even paid rent through paypal.
I will tell your more about the neighborhood and show you pictures of our place very soon. For now, read about it here

  1. Sounds exciting and besides the Aval...seems much easier than getting an apartment in the states! Enjoy your experience, Spain is beautiful!

    Great blog too:)

  2. Wow, congrats on getting an apartment so quickly. I am actually moving to Madrid from the States early Sept and I am worried about how long it will take to look for housing.
Did you guys just do it all on your own or did you use a service? Was there a particular website that was really useful? Congrats and thank you for any info that you are able to share :)

    take care,

  3. Yay rara. I'm happy that you found your piso. We've been out of town so I'm just now getting caught up on where you're at. I hope that you got your luggage. That sounds like the least fun part. But at least everything else is working out. When does David start classes? Miss you!
